Lord Soth has been given errata changing “damage […] dealt by creatures blocking or blocked by Lord Soth” to “noncombat damage”. The term “combat damage” was only implemented in Fifth Edition, released March 1997. Before that, cards referred to “damage during combat”, which has since been erratad to “combat damage” . The “Legends of Lore” Inquest article wasn’t published until a few months after Fifth Edition, in September 1997. It’s not unreasonable to think that either the card was designed before the change or the person writing the card hadn’t taken the recent rules change into account.
