UnCommander Rulings

In UnCommander, Optimus Prime, Inspiring Leader is not a double-faced (or triple-faced) card. The physical card has two other faces, but these are only functional in the Transformers Trading Card Game, not Magic: The Gathering.

Turning over a double-sided card using Optimus Prime’s ability does not count as transforming it.

Effects that care about being “turned face up” or “turned face down” can count objects turned over by Optimus Prime’s ability. However, a double-faced permanent being turned to its back face does not count as being “turned face down”.

Optimus Prime, Inspiring Leader’s second printed ability does not make it lose its abilities, just changes its subtypes, base power and toughness.

Optimus Prime has been given errata to change its typing to be consistent with Magic terminology. Its frame makes it clear that it is intended to be legendary, its power and toughness suggest that it is meant to be a creature, and the metallic outer card frame suggests that it is an artifact. Grimlock, Dinobot Leader is a precedent for how Transformers are represented in Magic.

It seems a bit of a missed opportunity that Optimus Prime doesn’t turn into a vehicle with his second ability, as he has the artifact type already. This would potentially be confusing though, as he is already a creature and doesn’t have a crew ability.
