Whenever a player either —
Casts a spell that would counter a spell which was cast, (most copied spells are not cast),
Casts a spell that, as it resolves, would become a permanent that enters the battlefield with counters on it,
— That player may choose one—
• When a spell is next cast, counter that spell.
• That player chooses a permanent, and puts an additional counter of a kind already there on it.

UnCommander Rulings

Ambiguity’s ability will not trigger when a spell that has a random chance of countering a spell is cast.

For Ambiguity’s ability to trigger from a spell that would counter, the countering effect must be sourced from the spell itself, and not any other sources.

Ambiguity’s ability will not trigger when a spell is cast that would counter a spell only if a choice is made.

The above rulings are using the template of Equinox’s Gatherer rulings.

“When a spell is next cast” refers to the next spell cast in the game after this ability resolves. This effect lasts indefinitely, irrelevant of turns ending, until a spell is cast. This cannot affect any spells already on the stack when Ambiguity’s ability resolves.

It is considered good conduct to put a labelled marker next to Ambiguity if a player chooses to counter the next spell cast, to make it clear whether the effect has triggered yet.

Removed “already played, but not countered” clause, as it creates significant memory issues between permanents that were played and those that entered the battlefield via other means.
